Application

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to mark out complex and irregular shapes and reflects advanced skills required to calculate cutting, bending lines and developments.

Where the skills required are for marking out activities associated with general engineering and maintenance functions, one or more of the following units should also be selected as appropriate:

  • MEM07005 Perform general machining
  • MEM12006 Mark off/out (general engineering)
  • MEM18006 Perform precision fitting of engineering components
  • MEM18014 Manufacture press tools and gauges.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:

  • following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
  • examining detailed drawings for fabrication requirements and specifications, including materials, quantities, measurements and tolerances, joining methods, standards and code requirements
  • calculating and marking allowances for fabrication and assembly
  • establishing and marking datum points
  • selecting and using parallel line, radial line and triangulation development methods with minimum material wastage with accurate dimensions for fabrications
  • producing templates and developing patterns accurately and following storage procedures.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • tools, equipment and techniques in template/patterns
  • datum points
  • geometrical principles and formulae
  • parallel line, radial line and triangulation development methods as applied to transitions geometric development
  • calculations of allowances, including manufacturers' allowances on materials
  • fabrication and assembly allowances and effects of material type/thickness
  • sources of data on fabrication/assembly allowances
  • materials and procedures for making template/patterns
  • template/patterns labelling, identification and storage
  • relevant standards, codes and symbols
  • fabrication materials
  • optimising material use and minimising material wastage.

Assessment Conditions

  • Assessors must:
  • have vocational competency in performing advanced geometric development – transitions at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
  • satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacementand comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacementor equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
  • Assessment must occur in a functioning workplace. Where assessment in the workplace would be unsafe, impractical or threatens the environment, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects the circumstances that would be experienced in a functioning workplace. Assessment must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
  • Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
  • Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
